Abstract: My talk will focus on Sarah Mary Fitton, Irish born botanist (Dublin 1795-Paris 1874) and on my journey through the archives, as I try to bring to light her scientific work in an effort to disentangle the individual hurdles she faced from the systemic difficulties that were typical for women scientists in the 19th century. I will discuss the position of researchers who, generations later, experience renewed injustice when facing the absence of sources. I will also question the role of the imagination to fill in the gaps left in those stories.
Marie Mianowski is a Full Professor of Anglophone Literature and Irish Studies at Grenoble Alpes University as well as a translator. She is the author of Post Celtic Tiger Landscapes in Irish Fiction (Routledge, 2017) and of many articles on the representations of place and landscape in Irish contemporary literature, especially the politics and representations of hospitality and homelessness. Her current research focuses on the writings and artistic productions of Irish botanists, especially women. She recently published the French translation of Léonie Villard’s war diary Journal de guerre: Lyon sous l’Occupation 1940-1944 (UGA Editions, 2024).
