‘A Water’s History of the United States,’ Middleburg,  May 21-23, 2025

The Roosevelt Institute for American Studies (RIAS) is origanizing the upcoming international conference, “A Water’s History of the United States,” taking place in Middelburg, in the Netherlands, from May 21-23, 2025. The event is organized by the RIAS in collaboration with the Netherlands American Studies Association and the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University.

This interdisciplinary gathering will feature contributions from over fifty scholars, including three distinguished keynote speakers, representing universities and research institutions from across Europe and the United States. The conference aims to explore how water resources and environments intersect with themes such as race, colonialism, infrastructure, warfare, resistance, urbanization, maritime culture, and literary identities throughout US history.

The event presents a unique opportunity to engage with and further develop the methods and principles of Blue History, an emerging field that promotes historical inquiry through water-based perspectives, narratives, and sources. To support and advance this endeavor, we will officially launch the Blue History Network during the conference, outlining its primary objectives and activities.
